Things to avoid are items that are useful but don't relate to jewelry, like a letter opener, bottle opener, etc. For more ideas, you can search "promotional items" or "advertising specialties" online. Another "gift" is a gift certificate for a nominal amount that they can give someone else. It might be $5 or $10, and make it clear that the idea is for your customer to give it to someone else. Leave space on the gift certificate for your customer to sign and write in the name of the recipient. It's a nice gift and marketing tool rolled into one! Finally, include a hand-written thank you note with each order. It shows how much you value each customer.
