The capital letters above are the bead key identifiers, which are referenced throughout the instructions.
Make a full-size design of the necklace, or photocopy pictures 1 and 2, enlarging them to the desired size. Transfer the design to fabric (Pic. 1, 2) firstly facing the original direction and then in the mirror image. Draw rivoli-sized circles in the marked places. Make small cross-shaped incisions in the centre of each circle. Apply glue to the rivolis and fix them in the incisions. Be careful to correct their position while the glue has not completely dried!
Attach G beads around the 9/16 inch (14mm) circles (Fig. 1). When the row is finished go through all the beads, pulling tightly on the thread. Bead two rows in peyote stitch in G and more row in J. Again, repeatedly go through the last bead row, pulling the thread taut. Embroider one row in K around the beaded rivoli.
Attach H beads around the 1/2 inch (12mm) circles (Fig. 1). Bead one peyote row in H and one more row in K (Fig. 2). Go through the last bead row for several times, pulling tightly on the thread. Embroider one incomplete row in M around the beaded rivoli (see Pic. 1, or the photo).
Embroider the fins in K, I, L (see the photo or Pic. 2). Trim away all the excess fabric as close to the last bead row as possible. Glue the leather. Let the glue dry. Trim away the excess leather. Work the basic edge row in K and attach the fins to the main part of the design, going through the seed beads of the basic row.
Embroider the other parts of the necklace (see the photo). Firstly embroider the head in K and sew one row in F around it. Then embroider the body, using beads and seed beads. Follow the pattern:
Work all the other rows so that their location look like scales. Embroider the fins and the tail in I, K, L. Now fill in the free space between 14mm rivoli and the fish head, using F and M.
- Fix one A (#1) and embroider in H around it
- Fix one more A (#2) and embroider in H around it
- Fix one B (#3) and embroider in G around it
- Again, fix one more B (#4) and embroider in G around it
- Fix one A (#5) and embroider in H around it
Trim away all the excess fabric. Sew the rings to the tail in the marked places. Glue the leather. Let the glue dry and trim away all the excess leather. Work the basic edge row in F (Fig. 3). Work the basic edge row around the rivoli, sewing two F and one E.
Connect the fish to each other, using six strings. For 1, 3 and 5 strings use J, G, I and B, C (Fig. 4), making them 15cm, 25cm and 41 cm long, respectively. For 2, 4, 6 strings use K, H and D, making them 20cm, 33cm and 50cm long, respectively.
Draw a 9/16 inch (14mm) circle on a piece of fabric. Make a cross-shaped incision in the centre of the circle. Glue a 14mm rivoli inside it. Embroider the rivoli (see Step 2). Trim away all the excess fabric. Attach hooks to the wrong side. Glue the leather. Let the glue dry. Work the basic edge row (Fig. 3), alternating two F and one E.
