Freaks of Winter in St Petersburg Necklace
Take two lengths of black soutache, 3-1/3" (1cm) each. Melt the ends with the help of a cigarette lighter. Sew both soutache braids together, trying to run through the groove. Attach the soutache along the cabochon perimeter (Picture 1). Work two pendants in A, B and G at the bottom of the cabochon. Embroider one half of the cabochon in A and G. Now put your cabochon back side down on a piece of leather and trace its outline using a pen. Put this piece of leather aside as you will need it later.
Fold white soutache in half and attach it to the black one of the same length, fixing them together with a few stitches. Do not forget to melt soutache ends with a cigarette lighter each time you cut a new length of soutache braid! Sew the ends to the fabric from the wrong side of the cabochon. Attach these newly cut soutache braids to the black soutache of the cabochon framing.
Make the soutache loops (Picture 2); the figures specify the sequence of work. Bead a freeform mesh in F and A inside each loop. (Fig. 1). A tip. You do not need to work all the loops in one length of soutache, as it is not very comfortable. Divide it into several pieces, one for each loop. Work each loop separately, fill in the free space inside the loops as mentioned above and then attach the loops to the back side of your cabochon.
Cut out the traced leather pattern (see Step 2). Then put the pattern on the paperboard and transfer its outline. Now remove the leather and draw a second line approximately 1/16’’ (2mm) inside of the traced line. Use scissors to cut out the paperboard pattern and then glue the cabochon onto it. Let the glue dry.
Bead around the leather pattern using J (Fig. 2). Now work a row in K (Fig. 3). Apply some glue to the paperboard and attach the beaded leather pattern to the cabochon. What we are going to do now is attach the piece of leather to soutache, fixing it along the edge. Firstly attach the beads marked blue * in Figure 3 to the soutache loops. Now note! There is something special about joining the sections, with pendants and bead embroidery: while working along these sections, connect the beaded leather to soutache by strings of three K beads.
