 Statement Necklaces

by Ambyre Phelps, Marketing Content Development Group, Exclusively for Fire Mountain Gems and Beads®

These days, statement necklaces are taking center stage in bridal jewelry. Large elaborate necklaces can be seen everywhere. The new bridal necklace has a distinct and modern shape to it. This take on the bib-style tends to include several large pieces, often arranged asymmetrically, that hang just below the collarbone. The large center portion of the necklace is terminated in a thinner strand that starts at the shoulders and reaches the clasp. Popular oversized components include embellished filigree shapes, epoxy coated flowers and much more. The look is the perfect accent to a strapless dress and a fashion-forward bride.

For a delicate, feminine take on the statement necklace use affordable gold- and silver-plated filigree components accented with rose quartz and mother-of-pearl cabochons. Eclectic mixed metals and large accent cabochons make the featured cream and pink necklace utterly feminine and perfectly stylish.

Here's How
  • Cut four equal lengths of French wire. Cut two 5-inch lengths of Accu-Flex® professional-quality beading wire.
  • String a crimp bead, the French wire, and a jumpring attached to one side of the clasp onto the end of the Accu-Flex beading wire. Double the wire back through the crimp bead and pull until the French wire makes a nice loop. Using a pair of crimp pliers, crimp the crimp bead.
  • Cut the excess wire with flush-cutters. Slide the crimp bead into a crimp cover, then using the front notch of the crimping pliers, gently compress the pliers to close the crimp cover concealing the crimp bead.
  • To create a 15-1/2 inch necklace, string seven SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS 4mm bicone crystals and six Swarovski crystal pearls in an alternating pattern, starting with a bicone.
  • Repeat for the other length of Accu-Flex beading wire. Adjust the number of beads as needed to increase or decrease the length of the necklace.
  • Place an 18mm rose quartz cabochon in a filigree mounting. Gently bend each of the four prongs over the edge of the stone using flat-nose pliers. Repeat with another cabochon.
  • String a crimp bead and another length of French wire onto the unattached end of the strand of bicones and pearls. Pull through the loop on the cabochon mounting.
  • Repeat for the other strand of pearls and bicones and rose quartz cabochon. Again, using the flat-nose pliers set the 10mm mother-of-pearl cabochons in the filigree link settings.
  • Using the jumprings to join the filigree pieces together, begin creating the center of the necklace. While the pattern is random, it is important to maintain a somewhat symmetrical bib-like shape to the necklace. To help with proper drape, this step may be most easily performed using a necklace form. Each large rose quartz cabochon should rest just below or at the collarbone in the final product.
  • When the desired design and drape is achieved, use Loctite 409 to adhere 6mm round rose quartz cabochons to the center of the filigree components as desired.
