As a child I used to pick up agate in its raw form along the Piedra and San Juan Rivers in southwest Colorado. For me fossil agate, in particular, captures a sense prevalent in the southwest-a sense of walking where people and creatures from a far earlier time had also walked. Everything about this agate speaks of something far older and more lasting than we are. The word agate comes from the Sicilian Achates River where agates were found in antiquity. And the pink and white swirls through the grey background of these beads give them a lovely time-aged mottled effect. Include fossil agate beads with shell or wood beads to heighten a sense of the beauty of things ancient and natural.
