Topics: Keeping a Design Notebook

Q.
I find it difficult to start a design from scratch. I don't want to copy other people's work but just don't know how to begin a design on my own--any suggestions?

- Alicia

A.
Keeping a journal or notebook of inspirational ideas, images, articles and sketches will help. Whenever you see something that speaks to you, cut it out and add it to your notebook. You don't have to limit your choices to pictures. You can use anything that grabs your interest and gets you fired up. Whether it is a falling leaf, a bit of fabric or paper, or maybe just a sketch, keep it organized and close at hand for when you need it.

You will be able to define your own personal sense of style by having your journal filled with items that appeal to you. The more you know your own tastes the more likely you are to do work that truly pleases yourself and others.

Be sure to look through the over thousands of designs in our Gallery of Designs for a great inspirational jumpstart.
