Topics: Mixing Gems of Different Hardness

Q.
Is there a general rule about mixing gems of different hardness?
- Lorielle
A.
It is recommended to take the hardness of the stones into consideration as the harder ones can scratch or wear away at the softer stones, although most gemstones lend themselves well to being mixed with others. Softer materials, like pearls, amber, malachite or turquoise, are often incorporated into designs by placing knots between the beads for additional protection.
