Q.
I'm trying to restring an old necklace made with Peruvian opals. What can I do when the old thread gets stuck in the stone? Is there a method for removing the thread? I hate to throw away my semi-precious stones, they are so beautiful.

An awl is a good tool to use for pushing out the old thread. Awls are smooth straight steel tools with sharp pointed tips and come in handy for many applications, including detangling knots.

Another option is using a bead reamer. This tool has a pointed steel profile with a diamond-coated tip and is used for enlarging bead holes. To get the thread out with a bead reamer, place the stone in water and carefully rotate the reamer inside the hole until the thread is removed.
