Bib-Style Necklace with Gold-Plated Brass Beads and Waxed Cotton Cord

STEP 1
Using flush-cutting pliers, cut twelve 30-inch long strands of lime green waxed cotton cord.
STEP 2
Find the center of the first strand of cord. Attach the cord to the necklace using a larks-head knot. Repeat to attach twelve strands of cord to the necklace.
STEP 3
Assemble the first two sets (4 strands) of 15-inch cords together. The outside two strands (these will be used as the knotting strands) and inside two strands (this will be used as the base strand), arranging the strands with the neckcord in between the long strands.

Pin the necklace to your work station to make it easier to form your knots evenly.
STEP 4
Make a square knot using the two outside strands over the one center neckcord. The basic pattern is:
  • Strand 1 over the base
  • Strand 2 over strand 1
  • Strand 2 under the base
  • Strand 2 through the loop
  • Strand 2 over base
  • Strand 1 over strand 2
  • Strand 1 under the base
  • Strand 1 through the loop
You must alternate starting with strand 1 then strand 2 to get a flat pattern. If you start consistently with the same strand the pattern will twist.

For this project you will want to make loose knots, which will leave more of the cords between the beads showing.
STEP 5
Make two square knots, then string one 10mm round gold-plated bead onto the center strands. Make two square knots.

Repeat to attach a 10mm round gold-plated bead to each of the six sets of cords to complete the first row.
STEP 6
Take the left knotting strand from the first bead and the right knotting strand from the second bead. String on, one 10mm round gold-plated bead. Make two square knots with the strands directly to the left and right of the bead.

Repeat to add four 10mm round gold-plated beads for a total of 5 beads to the adjacent strands to create the second row.
STEP 7
Repeat Step 5 and Step 6 using 9mm round gold-plated beads to create the third and fourth rows.

Tie the outside knotting strand on the left side of the necklace in an overhand knot next to the square knot. Place a small amount of adhesive on the knot to secure it in place. Using a pair of chain-nose pliers gently close a crimp cover over the knot.

Repeat to tie of the outside base strand on the left side and the outside knotting and outside base strand on the right side. Place a crimp cover over each of the knots.
STEP 8
Repeat Step 6 using four 8mm round gold-plated beads then Step 5 using five 8mm round gold-plated beads to create the fifth and sixth rows.

Repeat Step 7 to tie of the outside two strands of cord on each side of the necklace.
STEP 9
Repeat Step 5 using four 7mm round gold-plated beads, then Step 6 using three 7mm round gold-plated beads, then Step 5 using four 6mm round gold-plated beads to create the seventh, eighth, and ninth rows.

Repeat Step 7 to tie of the outside two strands of cord on each side of the necklace.
STEP 10
Repeat Step 6 using three 6mm round gold-plated beads to create the tenth row.

Repeat Step 7 to tie of the outside two strands of cord on each side of the necklace.
STEP 11
Repeat Step 6 using two 5mm round gold-plated beads to create the eleventh row.

Repeat Step 7 to tie of the outside two strands of cord on each side of the necklace.
STEP 12
Repeat Step 6 using one 5mm round gold-plated bead to create the twelfth row.

Repeat Step 7 to tie of the last four strands of cords.
