Meet the Designer-Artist

Our cover artist, Sonia Lidozzi created her colorful and intricate Bubble Sea, our cover piece, at her home in Ciampino, near Rome in Italy.

Almost a decade ago, Sonia chanced into watching another artist demonstrate the peyote seed bead stitch. The process so fascinated her that she discovered a real passion for beadwork and bead artistry.

Bubble Sea was inspired by a day with her grandson. They were playing with soap bubbles in the afternoon sunshine and she noticed how they sparkled and shimmered. Later, she got the idea to make them real using Swarovski crystals and fancy stones.

The necklace slowly grew and took shape. She created the various bubbles, then discovered colorful Shibori silk ribbon. The multicolored pleated silk--a growing trend in jewelry-making and embellished d├ęcor--became rippling waves in her colorful, bubbly ocean.

Ten years after lucking into an artist's demo, Sonia says, ''My love for this art grows and I'm always more and more keen.'' These days, Sonia explores a range of new techniques, creates pieces for shops in her area and sells finished jewelry in her Etsy store.

The backs of each bubble and comma-shaped wave are as gorgeously crafted and beautiful as the fronts, covered in soft color-coordinated leather pieces to give them strength and stability.

Where do you live?
Ciampino, near Rome

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
My inspirations come from what surrounds me, the nature, fabrics.. very important is my mood too.

What medium do you work with mostly?
In the free time I like weaving beads and I like to venture at various techniques.

Why did you become enchanted with this style of jewelry-making?
By chance, I saw a demonstration of the peyote technique and from there a real passion was started. It's been almost ten years and my love for this art grows and I'm always more and more keen.

Where and How do you sell your jewelry?
I just opened the shop in Etsy and I create realizable projects for shops

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Bubble Sea

What inspired this design?
The idea for the realization of Bubble Sea came thanks to my grandson. We like to play in the sunshine with soap bubbles, an afternoon looking at them I got the idea to realize them with Swarovski. I made the first bubble and slowly came the necklace

How did it come together?
The project came gradually during the realization. First I created the various bubbles, I studied the various gradations and then I got the idea of waves made using silk.
