What does the grade mean when referring to pearls?
- Mary
Fire Mountain Gems and BeadsĀ® grades pearls based on four qualities: pearl shape, luster, color and surface blemishes. Round, well-shaped pearls with high luster and even color tones are considered top of the line and would be listed as Grade A, while those that aren't very round and have multiple surface blemishes would be listed as Grade C or D. Refer to our "Cultured Freshwater Pearl Grading Guide" chart, for pictures demonstrating the differences between pearl grades.

Pearls that rate high in one quality but low in another will usually be listed as mixed grades.
