Topics: Gemstones

My customers occasionally ask me to prove that the stones in my designs, like smoky quartz, citrine and amethyst are authentic and not colored glass. Do you have any recommendations for how I could assure them, other than by giving my word?

Let your customer know that you only buy from reputable vendors that follow the strict guidelines of the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA).

And if they are unfamiliar with the organization, you can add that the AGTA is an association of United States and Canadian natural and colored gemstone and cultured freshwater pearl industry professionals dedicated to promoting the natural colored gemstone trade.

As a member of the AGTA, Fire Mountain Gems and Beads abides by the AGTA's Code of Ethics, which is an even higher standard than the Federal Trade Commission's Guides for the Jewelry Industry on disclosing colored gemstone enhancements.

It may also help to have a copy of "The Gemstone Information Manual by the American Gem Trade Association" written by the AGTA handy.
