Topics: Silver, Tarnish

Q.
How can I keep silver plated fishhook ball/coil earwires from tarnishing? I have them on display for my retail customers and have to pull stock when they change color.

A.
Store sterling silver and silver-plated items in a closed display case or sealed bag with Shine-On™ anti-tarnish paper strips. These non-toxic strips work by neutralizing tarnish-causing sulphur gases inside enclosed storage or displays. Each strip will last approximately 6 months, depending on the environment. If left in sealed bags, according to manufacturer's directions, the strips may last longer. Another thing to consider is your display tags--make sure they are made with acid-free paper. Some papers contain a high percentage of sulfur, thus contribute to tarnishing.
