Favorite Charity: LIFT (Literacy Instruction for Texas)
I wanted to find a local literacy agency in Dallas, so I called a friend who works at Half Price Books. I knew that the company, which is headquartered in Dallas, has a big involvement in literacy. My friend helped me get in touch with LIFT.
My mother was a teacher and lifelong lover of books and reading. After her death in 2002, I sought out LIFT, an adult literacy agency. They teach adults to read, do GED prep and family literacy (teaching adults and children the importance of reading together and sharing books). The largest part of their work is ESL for adults, all through free classes given at sites throughout North Texas. They help an incredible number of adults better themselves by learning to read.
I donate proceeds of my jewelry sales to a fund I established in my mother's name at LIFT, the Ann Cain Tibbets Family Literacy Fund. About the time I started the fund, I discovered my love for beading, and began creating more things than I could keep or give away. Now, I sell my jewelry and other beaded crafts at my office (for my real job in advertising) and on a website, www.beadingforreading.com. Through this I have been able to donate thousands of dollars to LIFT for the family literacy program.
