A local teenage girl is designing beautifully colored beaded earrings and is selling them to raise money for the children's room in the new home to be built for Womancare/Aegis Association on Mechanic Street in Dover-Foxcroft., Maine.

The project began as part of this young girl's community service program, a component of her home schooling curriculum. After creating beadwork for her family members two years ago, she was encouraged to make the beaded earrings to sell. As a pilot project, she created a dozen pairs of earrings, and her grandmother, Carol Shoreborn, offered to package them and offer them for sale to raise money for a children's room at the new home for Womancare, a domestic violence prevention and assistance project.

In December 2007, the young bead artist appeared at the Womancare office with a donation of $50 which she had earned from the sale of the earrings. At that time, she had hoped to donate a total of $100 to Womancare before the end of the year. Within a year she raised a total of $1,000 selling her beaded earrings--10 times her original goal--and donated all of the proceeds to Womancare for the new children's room. The Womancare Family thanks this young artist for using her creative ideas and talents to support the capital campaign for their new home. It is caring like this that creates a community. The new building and the children's room opened in 2009. Earrings by the young artist are available at the Womancare office at 8 Winter Street in Dover-Foxcroft and by calling 1-888-564-8165.

Womancare is a domestic violence prevention agency and offers a 24-hour helpline, advocacy for those impacted by domestic violence, advocacy in court and education in all area schools teaching about healthy relationships. If you or someone you know needs help, please call toll free 1-888-564-8165.
