Bosom Buddies, Women's Center of Jacksonville (FL)

Name: Bobbi de Cordova-Hanks

Favorite Charity: Bosom Buddies

When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, I was given five years to live. I was determined to survive and never wanted any other woman to have to fight this fight alone. Twenty-five years ago, I founded Bosom Buddies at the Women's Center of Jacksonville. Three different primary cancers and 27 years later, I am still going strong and have served more than 7,000 women without ever charging a penny for our services. We are the lifeline for women with breast cancer in North Florida.

Having cancer and founding Bosom Buddies has been a gift. Because of it, I have met the most incredible loving and courageous women of all ages, sizes, shapes and ethnic backgrounds. When you come to a Bosom Buddies support group meeting, you can feel the love in the room. We are a pink sisterhood. Not having children of my own, these are my chosen children. The love they give back can't be equaled by anything monetary.

A portion of the proceeds of the handcrafted jewelry I make and sell at health fairs and craft fairs goes to support Bosom Buddies. It all comes out of my personal pocket.
