Favorite Charity: Friends of the Kern County Animal Shelters Foundation
I am very active in the animal welfare community in Bakersfield, California. I volunteer for several organizations, and served on the board of Friends for several years.
They have no paid employees, and very little overhead. The majority of funds raised goes right back into helping local homeless animals.
I have historically sold my jewelry at only Friends' fundraising events. However, now I am working on a project called Neutered Gems. I take used, old, broken, or dirty pieces and refurbish them, as well as make many new pieces myself. Then I show up at any event being held by one of the many local animal welfare organizations and set up my booth. 100% of jewelry sale proceeds go to that organization. While there, I give out flyers explaining that I take donated old, used, dirty or broken jewelry for rehab and sales at the next fundraising event. I don't actually exchange money anywhere, I just provide the service because I enjoy the jewelry, and love animals.
