Single-Strand Necklace and Earring Set with Prometheus® Bronze Clay, Turquoise Gemstone Beads and 14Kt Rose Gold-Filled Beads

Clay Pieces

Wet Stage

STEP 1
Remove Prometheus™ Bronze Clay from the packaging and place it on a clean stiff plastic surface or wax paper.

Break off half of the clay and place the other half of the clay in a sealed glass jar of your choice.
STEP 2
Using a clay roller, start rolling out one half of the clay. Spray the top of the clay with water to keep it moist, then roll the clay in on itself.

Knead and fold the clay until it feels consistent. It should be squishy with no cracking.

Tip:
  • Conditioning your fingers and tools can help work the clay and keep the clay from sticking.
  • Have a spray bottle on hand to help keep the clay moist as you work it. Do not over wet the clay; it will feel somewhat muddy.
STEP 3
Place the first section of clay in the glass jar and repeat Step 2 with the second half of the clay.

Place the second half of the clay into the glass jar.

Remove about half of one of the sections of clay to work with.

Tip: Placing a wet sponge in the bottom of the jar will keep your clay in good condition until the next use.
STEP 4
Place a section of the clay over the sun stamp at one end of the silicone mod. Use the clay roller to press the clay into the stamp. The clay should be approximately two millimeters thick. Remove the clay from the stamp.

Repeat to create a second clay sun.

Allow the clay sun pieces to start drying.

Tip: Silkbaby may be used for easier release.

Dry Stage

STEP 5
While the clay pieces are continuing to dry, outline the pattern of the sun on each piece to make them more prominent. File and grind each clay piece removing any rough edges and to define the rays of the sun.

Tip:
  • The pieces will need to be completely dry prior to firing.
  • Care will need to be taken in this stage.

Firing

STEP 6
Using a torch, fire one clay sun piece at around 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a cherry red color. The firing time is approximately seven minutes; however, it may take longer.

Quench the clay sun piece in water while it is still hot.

Repeat for the remaining clay sun piece.

Finishing

STEP 7
Take one fired clay sun piece and brush it with a metal brush. Place it in a hot pickling solution.

After pickling, rinse with water and dry. Repeat for the remaining clay sun piece.
STEP 8
Using a burnisher, run it back and forth across one clay piece. You can use the tip of the burnisher to bring a shine to the imprint of the stamp, if you wish.

Repeat for each of the clay pieces.
STEP 9
Mix equal parts of Apoxie for two minutes or until thoroughly combined.

Apply apoxie to the setting of one 12mm double-sided round link. Place the back of one clay sun piece onto the apoxie and allow to dry according to manufacturer's instructions.

Repeat to create a second clay sun link.

Necklace

STEP 10
Cut 13 6-inch lengths and two 15-inch lengths of 22-gauge wire and two 2-inch lengths of 4.5x2mm textured oval cable chain.
STEP 11
Make a wrapped loop on one end of one 6-inch length of wire.

String the following onto the wire:
  • One 14Kt rose gold-filled 2mm round
  • One 14Kt rose gold-filled 3mm round
  • One turquoise 8x6mm tube
  • One 14Kt rose gold-filled 3mm round

Make a wrapped loop on the straight end of the wire. Trim any excess wire.

Repeat to create a total of eight turquoise tube links.
STEP 12
Make a wrapped loop on one end of one 6-inch length of wire. String one turquoise graduated fan bead onto the length of wire.

Make a wrapped loop on the straight end of the wire. Trim any excess wire.

Repeat to create a total of four turquoise graduated fan links.

Tip: These four turquoise graduated fan links should be roughly the same size for consistency.
STEP 13
Repeat Step 12 using the largest turquoise graduated fan bead. This bead will be used as the main turquoise graduated fan bead focal.
STEP 14
Make a wrapped loop on one end of one 15-inch length of wire.

String one turquoise graduated fan bead onto the length of the wire.

Start to make a wrapped loop and rather than trimming the excess wire, wrap the wire around the turquoise fan bead using the remaining wire.
STEP 15
Repeat Step 14 using the remaining 15-inch length of wire wrapping one turquoise graduated fan bead on the opposite side creating a mirror image.

Tip: The turquoise graduated fan beads used in Steps 14 - 15 should be smaller than others used in the project.
STEP 16
Pass one 4mm jumpring through the last link in one length of chain and one loop on one turquoise tube link then close.

Pass one 4mm jumpring through the opposite loop on the previous turquoise tube link and one loop on one turquoise tube link then close.

Using 4mm jumprings, repeat to connect a total of four turquoise tube links.
STEP 17
Using 4mm jumprings, connect the following:
  • The remaining loop from the previous four turquoise tube links (Step 16)
  • Two turquoise graduated fan links (Step 12)
  • One clay sun link
  • One wrapped turquoise graduated fan bead (Steps 14 - 15)

  • One clay sun link
  • Two turquoise graduated fan links (Step 12)

STEP 18
Repeat Step 16.

Using one 4mm jumpring, connect the last link on one length of chain to the loop on one lobster claw clasp.

Using one 4mm jumpring, connect to the last link on the remaining length of chain.
