Hairpins with Seed Beads and Glass Beads

"Summer Mood" Hairpins

  • Bead, crystal, pink 6x8mm flattened (2 beads) (D)
  • Bead, green 7mm bicone (2 beads) (E)
  • Bead, pearl, 8x15mm oval (2 beads) (F)
  • Seed bead, Czech glass, translucent white, size 10/0 (A)
  • Seed bead, Czech glass, translucent with white line inside, size 10/0 (B)
  • Seed bead, Czech glass, silver­lined topaz, size 10/0 (C)
  • Base for a clasp
  • Wire, 0.3-0.5mm
  • Beading foundations
  • Glues and adhesives

Small bells (fig. 1)

STEP 1

 Row 1. Pick up 6A and close them into a ring.
Row 2. 6A between the beads of the previous row.
Row 3-7. Bead Ndebele rope.
Row 8. Work Ndebele rope, insert 1A between the pairs of seed beads.
Row 9. Work 1A atop each pair of seed beads.
Go through all the beads of the last row, pull the thread taut and anchor it. You will need 6 flowers more for the hairpin.

Large bells (fig. 2)

 Row 1. Pick up 5B and close them into a ring.
Row 2. Work 2 beads between the beads of the first row.
Row 3. Work 2 beads in Ndebele stitch atop the pairs of seed beads of the previous row. Pick up 1B between the pairs of seed beads.
Row 4. Work Ndebele stitch, working 2B between the pairs of seed beads.
Row 5-9. Work 10 pairs of Ndebele stitch.
Row 10-11. Work Ndebele stitch and pick up 1 additional bead between the pairs of seed beads.
Row 12. Work 1B atop the pairs of seed beads.
Go through all the beads more than once and pull the thread taut. Tie off the thread tail and cut it off. You will need two flowers more for the hairpin.

Middle Bells

 Work the rope in peyote stitch (fig. 3) approximately 10-12 rows in length.

Assembling Bells

Cut small length of a wire. Insert and fix it into the middle of the bells. Put the small bell and several A seed beads atop the wire.

Gather 7 flowers. Put the large bells and several B seed beads atop three small bells. You will get large flowers.

Leaves and curls

STEP 5
Work four leaves in peyote stitch, using B. Insert the wire into the beads of the bottom corners and pick up 2-3 seed beads for the stalk. Work two curls in your own way, using A, C. Go through the bottom edge beads and pull the thread. Slide the wire through the edge bottom beads and work the curl shape (see the photograph).

 Fix D, E beads onto the wire (pic.1). Take a small length of wire and pick up C onto it, slide it down to the middle of the wire. Put the ends of the wire together and pick up the bead and several C beads onto them. Take two ends of the wire and go through the last C towards each other. Connect the end of the wire together.

 Attach F beads to the wire and work one row around in C, using picture 2 as a guide.

  1. Make the composition, using the photograph as a guide.
  2. Cut out leather strip, on 1/16-inch (2-3mm) wider than the hairpin base and it has to cover the top and the back side of the hairpin base.
  3. Cut out small holes and insert the ends of the wire into it. Fix it in some place to the back side. Glue the ready design to the hairpin base. Glue the lengths of leather to the back side and connect them in the middle. Let the glue dry and trim away all the excess leather. Embroider the edge in C (fig. 6).
