Best Foot Forward

Warm weather means sandals and bare feet, so don some fun jewelry down there with ankle bracelets--more commonly known as anklets.

Popular in the '90s, ankle jewelry is making a comeback among teens and all those who are young at heart. And while anklets, like most other types of jewelry, appeal mainly to the feminine crowd, they come in styles that will suit more masculine tastes, too.

Chain Anklets

Chain anklets are straightforward, simple and versatile. Be they made of fine gold or sterling silver, or something heftier such as stainless steel, an unadorned chain across your ankle is a timeless, unisex look and an easy transition piece if you're new to the trend.

Simple Anklets

These are usually a chain with one small link in the center, such as a bead, gemstone, crystal, or even your name in the metal of your choice. A simple anklet can also have Beaded Chain interspersed in the chain incorporating beads of metal, gemstone, crystal, glass or other materials. Satellite chain, which has tiny beads attached directly to the chain, is another great option. This type of anklet is also an easy transition piece, as it adds a bit of pizzazz while still being fairly subtle.

Crystal Anklets

If you're feeling confident with your foot jewelry and want a bit of bling, give crystal anklets a go. These can be as simple as rhinestone links in a chain or as fancy as the entire anklet made of rhinestone-studded cupchain. A luxurious style either way, since the sparkling man-made crystals replicate the look of diamonds. These are appropriate for any time you want to be especially dressy and formal.

Layered Anklets

Trendy right now are layered anklets, mirroring the popular stacked rings and layered necklaces trends. The most common style incorporates chains with dangling charms, beaded links or a combination, but just about any type of anklet can be worn in multiples.

Beaded Anklets

Anklets made entirely of beads are a great way to add a splash of color. This could be a string of beads in your birthstone or favorite color, seed beads in single or multiple strands or decorative patterns such as daisy chains or kumihimo--anything casual and playful goes.

Beach Anklets

Also fun and causal is the beach anklet. Acceptable with any casual attire, on or off the beach, materials for this style are generally able to endure sand and water. Commonly used materials include macramé made from hemp, cotton and other natural fiber cords. These anklets often include shells, shell-shaped beads and other beach- and nautical-themed components.

Barefoot Sandals/Foot Flowers

The foot version of the panjas bracelet, or hand flower, these are anklets attached to the second toe by a chain or string of beads. They can be simple or elaborate, made of metal links in a line or a mesh, metal filigrees connected with jump rings, or even lace.

In short, anklets can be as simple or elaborate as you desire and are confident wearing. Decorations can include charms, drops, filigrees, gemstones, initial charms, name links—pretty much anything. As with any type of jewelry, the only limit is your imagination.
