Obsidian, Snowflake Gemstone Properties

Design Possibilities

Think of a night so dark everything seems to have disappeared. The moon is gone, the stars and planets are gone. Even the house around you has been swallowed up by blackness. With a flashlight, you look out the window and see great white flakes of snow floating to earth. That's the look of snowflake obsidian. It's actually volcanic glass that has formed as lava quickly cools. Its snowflake appearance is produced by internal crystallites. Also referred to as flowering obsidian, snowflake obsidian is found primarily in Utah. For an unusually beautiful necklace with a sophisticated flare, combine snowflake obsidian beads with black matte Delica and rock crystal beads interspersed with Renaissance spacers. With snowflake obsidian, you can have the best of two worlds: the sophistication of black and white and the natural beauty of snow falling around you.

Metaphysical/Healing Properties

If you grew up where snow floated down in huge, beautiful flakes, you understand how snowflake obsidian connects us to our earliest, happiest memories. Remember how wonderful it was to be snowed-in? Shut off from the outside world's demands and distractions, you watched the snow quietly fill the world around you. All was well. You felt safe and protected. That's the sense of things snowflake obsidian can give us. Like a sky full of beautiful snowflakes, it restores something: a deep, abiding sense of protection and reverence.
