I’m making wire-wrapped glass stud earrings. What gauge and wire type is best? I’d like to use sterling silver. Would half-hard be sturdy enough for an earring back?

Article FAQ Answer Icon

Sterling silver half-hard wire is a great choice for wire-wrapped stud earrings because it provides durability and structure while still allowing for some flexibility during wrapping. 20-22 gauge is commonly used for the post, as it fits most pierced ears comfortably. However, for added strength, you may want to work harden the wire stud with a rawhide mallet on a steel block after shaping to ensure it holds up as an earring back.
