When doing wire weaving, I am having a hard time keeping the base wires straight, so my design comes out a little crooked.  I am using either 20- or 18-gauge base wire.  What am I doing wrong?

Keeping base wires straight in wire weaving can be tricky at first, but with a few adjustments, you’ll see a big improvement! Here are some tips to help:

  • Secure Your Base Wires – Before you start weaving, anchor your base wires in place. You can use painter’s tape or small clamps. This helps keep them aligned as you work.
  • Keep a Light but Consistent Tension – When wrapping your thinner weaving wire around the base wires, try to keep an even, gentle tension. Pulling too tightly can cause the base wires to bend, while wrapping too loosely can make the weave look uneven.
  • Straighten as You Go – Every few wraps, take a moment to check your base wires. If they start to curve or shift, gently straighten them with nylon-jaw pliers or run your fingers along them to smooth out any bends.
  • Use a Mandrel or Frame for Support – If your design allows, working over a mandrel or a form can help maintain structure while weaving.

With practice, keeping your base wires straight will become second nature! Keep going, and soon your weaves will look smooth and professional. Happy weaving!
