The spiritual value of these stones will vary depending on the dyed stones they come from, such as jasper. Some people believe any black stone has a power associated with its blackness that intensifies the spiritual values of the gemstones around them.
Because these stones vary, their physical properties vary also. Many are from jasper, a variety of microcrystalline silicon dioxide--a form of chalcedony with a Moh's hardness of 7.
Blackstone can be cleaned using warm water, a mild soap and a soft cloth. Be sure to rinse the stone and pat it dry before storing. While some of the stones may be difficult to scratch, many may be susceptible to damage (and they certainly can damage other stones), so store blackstone separately in a fabric bag.
Beads carved from blackstone make stunning, unusual centerpieces for beaded necklaces. Although striking when used in Southwestern and modern designs, blackstone can be used in other settings. For example a design featuring a carved good fortune symbol bead as a centerpiece with various sized black cinnabar, crystal and black onyx beads and pewter squares as spacers for a beaded necklace that looks both classy and classical.
