Riverstone History
Riverstone is a sedimentary rock, a form of limestone. It is not to be confused with the red and yellow Patuxent River Stone, an agate and cryptocrystalline form of quartz. Riverstone, or river stone, is also a used as a generic term for an undifferentiated mix of rocks found in a river bed. Naturally opaque with a light tan color, riverstone gemstone is most often dyed into a wide variety of colors, making it an inexpensive alternative to gemstones such as turquoise. With a Mohs hardness of 3-1/2, it is regarded as being easy to work with. Riverstone beads have been specially cut to reveal unusual and interesting surface features.

The considerable energy of riverstone is thought to invigorate the aura and facilitate change and resolution to one's inward and outward processes. It is also thought to enliven physical as well as mental activities such as problem solving and meditation leading to more profound spiritualization. Riverstone is linked to the zodiac signs of Scorpio and Libra.

Proper Care of Riverstone
Because riverstone is a soft stone, riverstone jewelry should be washed with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth or soft brush. Rinse the stone and pat it dry before storing.
Designing with Riverstone
Natural or coated riverstone components (typically tan or light brown) work well as neutral-color spacers separating color components or grouped together to achieve a nature-inspired or a stylish monochromatic effect. When dyed into a variety of colors, riverstone beads offer a myriad of design opportunities limited by their softness, which would restrict their use in jewelry subject to impact such as bracelets, rings or anklets.
