Discovered serendipitously in 1967 by Scottish geologist Campbell R. Bridges, tsavorite was found in the mountains northeast of Tanzania. Bridges stumbled upon these sparkling green gems while evading a water buffalo by diving into a gully. Despite being denied a permit to export the stones, Bridges relocated his efforts to Kenya, where the same geological formations prevailed. Referred to as the “Rolls Royce of Green” by Harry Platt of Tiffany and Co., tsavorite remains the most highly prized garnet in today's market.
