Tsavorite Garnet History
When garnet comes to mind, most envision its shimmering shades of rich red. However, Tsavorite, a type of grossular garnet, boasts a striking green hue that often gets mistaken for emerald. Discovered serendipitously in 1967 by Scottish geologist Campbell R. Bridges, Tsavorite was found in the mountains northeast of Tanzania. Bridges stumbled upon these sparkling green gems while evading a water buffalo by diving into a gully. Despite being denied a permit to export the stones, Bridges relocated his efforts to Kenya, where the same geological formations prevailed. Referred to as the “Rolls Royce of Green” by Harry Platt of Tiffany and Co., Tsavorite remains the most highly prized garnet in today's market.

Tsavorite Garnet Geological Properties
Tsavorite, the rarest type of garnet, is a gem-quality variety of grossular (grossularite) garnet. Known for its brilliance and dispersion, tsavorite can surpass emeralds in these qualities while matching their hardness. Its exceptionally high refractive index grants it a sparkle reminiscent of diamonds. Despite garnets typically exhibiting magnetic properties, tsavorite stands out as one of the least magnetic varieties.
Tsavorite is rare and was only recently discovered outside of the initial deposits in the Usambara mountain range. The best-known tsavorite garnet deposits are still in Tanzania and Kenya, but the gemstone can also be found in Madagascar, Pakistan and Antarctica.

Proper Care of Tsavorite Garnet
Tsavorite garnet, with a hardness rating of 7 to 7-1/2, is a relatively durable gemstone. While ultrasonic cleaners can be used safely for tsavorite without inclusions, the preferred method for cleaning is with mild soap, water and a soft, untreated cloth. Avoid treated cloths that may contain coarse agents which can scratch the stone's surface. After cleaning, ensure thorough drying of both the stone and its settings before storing or wearing your tsavorite garnet jewelry.
