How to Use a Disc Cutter

video

Metal disc cutters save you time and energy when creating jewelry with shaped pieces of metal sheet. See how to use these handy jewelry-making tools as Michael explains the ins and outs.

Instructions

Step 1
Hole punch

Remove all punches from the steel disc cutter.

Step 2
Sheet of metal in the hole punch

Slide the metal item or sheet between the plates of the disc cutter.

Step 3
Hitting punch with a rubber mallet

Place the size punch you want into the appropriate opening on the cutter base, putting the end of the punch that is flush (not rounded) into the opening. Using the mallet, brass and nylon hammer, or hammer of your choice hit the punch gently and repeatedly until the punch pushes through the metal. Make sure to keep the metal sheet stable while you are striking the punch--any movement will cause the punch to leave marks on the metal sheet and not give you a clean disc.

Step 4
Punched out circle next to hole punch

Remove the sheet from the cutter; the cut-out disc will be separate from the sheet.
