Saltwater Copper Etching

video

Saltwater etching, also known as electrolytic etching, is a process in which you use electrical current to remove particles from metal. Adding a resist on specific areas lets you protect them and create a design with a clear physical contrast.

Saltwater etching is considered safer and more environmentally friendly than chemical etching because it uses non-toxic materials and doesn't require a large, ventilated workspace. It's simple and safe, anyone can do it. It just takes a little homemade equipment and a battery.

If you aren't seeing the magic happen, make sure that the copper sheet and wire are bare. If there's any coating it won't work.

Exercise caution when connecting the battery to the copper components, and be sure to use a non-metallic bowl for your electrolyte solution.

Once finished, pour remaining solution into a closed container like a milk jug and dispose of it as any household hazardous waste. Every city has a plan for this—check with your local transfer station.

We recommended using a well-ventilated area and keeping hands away from your eyes if you get copper laden solution on them. Don't ingest the solution.
