Emma Marliave Meet the Designer-Artist

Where do you live?

Tangent, Oregon

What inspires you as a designer-artist?

All of the designs I create are my own and are usually inspired by nature. I am someone who loves to go out into the wilderness and use those experiences to drive my creations. I love to bead birds and animals especially! Often I use my own photography for my beadwork.

What materials do you most enjoy working with?

I usually work with size 15 round and Delica beads, depending on the designs and detail I need. I am very cognizant of weight and these beads allow me to do the detailed work I want without the weight.

Why did you become enchanted with this style of jewelry-making/crafting?

I love the versatility of this medium. I am able to craft pieces that speak to me and I am consistently learning. When I began in 2021 I had such a different style than I have now. It has been a lot of fun to learn and try new things with my art.

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?

Black Panther

What inspired this design?

I have been falling in love with Delica beads because they allow me to have so much detail. I wanted to do a panther and try to capture the angles and light that bounce off them.

How did it come together?

This pair had an original design, but as I bead, that design can change based on how it is coming together. It makes the process a long one, but worth the effort in the end.

When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?

I began to bead a few years after I was given my sister’s beading collection after she passed away. I held on to them for years and then began to create with them. It was an amazing healing process for me to learn something that my sister liked to do, and made me feel closer to her as I learned more. Since then I have found a love and passion for beading; creating images that speak to me.

Where and how do you sell your jewelry?

Instagram (@emmaotherwisedesigns) is the best way to find my current projects and contact me for earrings and what’s new. I am in the works of creating my own website.
