See how to keep metal clay the right consistency as you create jewelry by following these handy metal clay tips from award-winning mixed media artist Lisa Pavelka.
Instructions
Metal clay requires the proper consistency before working with it. When fresh, or in humid climates, let the clay dry out just a little bit before working with it so that it doesn't stick to tools. However, in a dryer climate, moisture may need to be added to the clay beforehand.
Place the clay onto a double-layer of plastic cling wrap. Apply a dab of water to your fingertip then apply the water onto the clay. This allows more control of the application of water to the clay.
Tips:
Begin to work the clay between the plastic wrap by folding it over on itself. Press the clay between your fingers (with the plastic wrap as a barrier) to distribute the dab of water.
Open up the plastic wrap then fold the clay over itself again in a different direction. Repeat the folding process a couple of times until the clay is consistent throughout.
If the clay is still too dry, add another dab of water using your fingertips then repeat Steps 2 until the desired consistency is achieved.
When finished, twist the plastic wrap closed around any unused clay then place into a zip-lock bag. Metal clay stored this way can keep its consistency for several days or even weeks!
Tip: Wrap the clay with a damp paper towel to extend the working time of the clay.
