Q.
What is sterling silver made of?
- Annika, NY
A.
Sterling silver items are made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper or other alloy proportions fixed by law (.925 = 92.5% silver, 7.5% other). Sterling will "patina" in time, that is, its color will take on an "antique" look. Fine silver = .999 or 100% pure silver will patina much more slowly than sterling silver due to the higher level of silver present. Coin silver = .900 or 90% silver/10% copper.
