Combine tubular peyote with a hand-painted porcelain bead, a few complementary beads and a fun clasp for a very dramatic finished piece.
Cut a 3-yard length of thread and add a needle to the end of the thread that is first off the spool.
Thread on eight root beer size 8/0 seed beads. Bring the beads toward the end of the thread, leaving an 18-inch tail to be used later.
Pass the needle back through all 8 beads again, then through the first bead strung (bead closest to the tail) one more time. Pull the thread so the beads tighten up and form a circle. This is the base row.
String on one root beer size 8/0 seed bead and pass the needle through the third bead in the row (you skip one bead from where your needle exited in step 3). String one root beer size 8/0 seed bead, skip a bead in the base row and pass your needle through the fifth bead in the row. Repeat this pattern all the way around the first row of beads, skipping a bead each time you add a new bead--working until you have added four root beer size 8/0 beads.
Pass the needle up through the first bead added in Step 4; this is called a step-up and positions your needle and thread so you can begin the next row.
Repeat Steps 4 and 5 one more time, adding beads and passing your needle through the beads that are ''popped up'' along the row.
After stepping up, pick up one amethyst 4mm round bead, pass the needle through the next popped-up bead, then continue around the row adding root beer size 8/0 beads between the popped-up beads. By adding an amethyst round in the ''first bead'' of each new row, a spiral effect will emerge.
Repeat Step 7 until the length of your spiral rope is about 4 inches long. Finish the last two or three rows with just root beer size 8/0 beads.
Pass your thread through the last row of four beads one more time to cinch them closer together and reinforce the end of the beadwork.
Begin stringing the beads that complement the porcelain bead, then the porcelain bead, and a few more complementary beads. Pick up a few root beer size 11/0 seed beads, the loop on the circle-half of the toggle clasp and then a few more root beer size 11/0 seed beads. Pass the needle through the first section of complementary beads, the porcelain bead, the second section of complementary beads, and then into a few size 8/0 beads in the spiral rope.
Work your needle through the spiral and then out, through all the complementary and porcelain beads, and then into the seed beads and the clasp again. Pass back and forth as many times as the beads will allow (the needle will be harder and harder to pass through the beads as they fill up with thread--use chain-nose pliers to help pull the needle through, if necessary). Once the clasp is secure, pass the needle through the beads, then into the size 8/0 beads in the rope, working the thread down into the spiral pattern, and passing toward the other end of the bracelet. If your thread will make it to the end, pass the needle out of the last row of seed beads. Tie a surgeon's knot with the two threads on this end and continue back into the rope.
Make a few half-hitch knots once your thread gets to be about 4 inches long. Trim once you've secured the thread.
Tip: You may be able to pass the thread through the complementary beads, but not through the pearls. If this happens, instead of passing through the pearls, pick up a few size 11/0 seed beads and "bridge" over the pearl, into the next bead in line. This will significantly strengthen the section as well as enhance your design.
Place a needle on the tail thread, pick up a few root beer size 11/0 seed beads, the loop on the bar-half of your toggle and a few more root beer size 11/0 seed beads. Test the clasp to be sure there is enough length for the toggle bar to pass through the circle--if it fits, great! If not, remove and add more size 11/0 seed beads and repeat until the toggle bar passes through the circle portion of the toggle.
Pass the thread through the root beer size 8/0 seed bead opposite from where your needle exited, pass it through a few root beer size 8/0 beads in the spiral and then back up through the root beer size 11/0 seed beads and toggle bar again. Repeat until secure.
Weave your thread into the spiral rope, making half-hitch knots as you pass between root beer size 8/0 beads. Trim the thread once it's secure.
