Double-Strand Necklace and Earring Set with Swarovski Crystal, Polyester Soutache Cord and Gold-Plated Brass Bead Caps

Necklace

STEP 1
Using flush cutters cut the following:
  • One 26-inch length of Accu-Flex® professional-quality beading wire
  • One 22-inch length of beading wire
Using scissors cut the following:
  • Four 8-inch sections of gold soutache cord
  • Four 6-inch sections of gold soutache cord
  • Four 8-inch sections of purple soutache cord
  • Four 6-inch sections of purple soutache cord
  • Four 8-inch sections of black soutache cord
STEP 2
String onto one 3/4 inch gold-plated ball pin: one iridescent purple Swarovski 11x8mm pear pearl and one gold-plated 7x4mm flower beadcap then form a simple loop. Repeat to create a total of two pear pearl drops.

Creating Soutache Components

STEP 3
Thread a beading needle with an approximately 3-foot length of black nylon thread. Knot the end of the thread.

Match up the ends of one 8-inch section of black cord, one 8-inch section of purple cord and one 8-inch section of gold cord, so the grooves face the same direction.

Pass the needle through all three pieces of cords in the grooved center of the lengths of cord. Make a few small stitches to secure. End with the needle and thread exiting the gold cord.
STEP 4
String one iridescent purple pear pearl (wide end first) and one paradise shine 3mm bicone. Wrap the gold cord around the pearl and bicone, turning the bicone sideways. Pass through the gold cord then back through the gold cord, the bicone and the gold cord on the opposite side. Secure the two sides of the gold trim with a few tiny stitches where they meet just after the beads.

Bring the purple and black cords around to follow the path of the gold cord. Secure all three colors of cord together by applying a few small stitches, as you did with the gold cord. Finish with the needle exiting the black cord.
STEP 5
Pass through one smoky mauve Swarovski 6mm rondelle, bringing the rondelle snugly up against the black cord. Wrap the black cord around the rondelle, reversing the curve from the previous bead addition. Pass through the black cord and stich a few times to secure it around the bead.

Bring the purple and gold cords around to follow the path of the gold cord. Secure the cords together around the rondelle. Finish with the needle exiting the gold cord.
STEP 6
Pass through one smoky mauve Swarovski 4mm rondelle, bringing the rondelle snugly up against the gold cord. Wrap the gold cord around the rondelle, once again reversing the curve. Repeat Step 5 to secure the cords around the rondelle.

Bring the ends of the cord to the back of the piece and secure with a few stitches.
STEP 7
Repeat Steps 5 and 6 to complete the other half of the small soutache component.
STEP 8
Apply E-6000 to the ends of the soutache cord where you plan to trim, allow the adhesive to be absorbed by the cord. When the adhesive begins to dry, trim excess cord at the adhesive.
STEP 9
Repeat Steps 3 - 8 two more times to create a total of three small soutache components.
STEP 10
Thread the beading needle then knot the thread 3/4 inch from the end. String on one 4mm paradise shine bicone, one iridescent purple pear pearl (narrow side first) and a second 4mm paradise shine bicone.

Pass the needle through one 6-inch section of gold soutache cord, slightly off from the center of the length. Pull the thread until the bicone is snug against the gold cord. Pass back through the cord and the beads.

Bring the gold soutache cord around the beads until one side of the beads are surrounded. Pass through the gold cord, back through the gold cord and back through the beads, securing the gold soutache cord around one side of the beads.

Bring the gold soutache cord around the other side of the beads then pass through the gold cord. Pull the thread tight to bring the two side of the gold cord together close around the beads. Finish by exiting to the outside of the connected gold cord.
STEP 11
Using small stitches along the soutache cord grooves, attach the purple cord to the gold cord around the beads. Once you have attached the purple cord around the beads, bring all four cord ends together, with the gold cord in the middle. Pass through the grooves of all four cord ends and continue to stitch along the groove for 1-inch.

Repeat Step 8 to secure the teardrop-shaped piece.
STEP 12
Repeat Steps 10-11 to create a total of four teardrop shaped pieces.
STEP 13
Place one small soutache component on your work surface with the wide end of the pear pearl towards you. Position one teardrop soutache piece so the 1-inch tail goes behind the center of the small component and the teardrop bead is just to the outside of the rondelle bead curve of cord. Repeat this on the other side of the small component with a second teardrop-shaped piece.
STEP 14
Stitch the components together; starting on the inside of the black soutache cord on the small component passing through the purple cord of the teardrop-shaped piece and repeating down the length of the cords.

Once the teardrop-shaped piece and the small component are securely attached, repeat Step 8 to trim excess cord from the teardrop-shaped piece.

Repeat with the second teardrop-shape (Step 13).
STEP 15
Center one 8-inch length of gold soutache cord between the teardrop-shaped pieces attached in Step 14. Arrange the cord so it follows the curves of the two teardrop-shaped pieces.
STEP 16
Thread the needle then secure with a knot. Starting in the center of the cord length and using small stitches attach the gold cord to the purple cord of one teardrop-shaped piece. Stop stitching just as the gold cord is moving around the curve of the teardrop shape (where the beads begin).

Repeat to attach one 8-inch purple length of cord to the gold cord.

Repeat once more to attach one 8-inch black length of cord to the purple cord. Finish with the needle and thread exiting the black cord.
STEP 17
String one 6mm smoky mauve rondelle. Bring the black, purple and gold cord around the rondelle. Pass the needle and thread through all three cords, pulling to snugly surround the rondelle with the soutache cords. Bring the cord ends around the bead and behind the component. Secure with a few stitches on the back of the piece.

Repeat Step 8 to secure the cords.
STEP 18
Repeat Steps 16 - 17 to secure the other half of the soutache cords added in Steps 15 - 16 and create a second bead swirl.
STEP 19
Place the large soutache component on your work space in the same direction as before. Place the two remaining teardrop-shaped soutache pieces between the rondelle swirls created in Steps 18 - 19. The tail of the teardrop shaped pieces should go behind the large soutache component.
STEP 20
Thread the needle then secure with a knot. Repeat Step 14 to secure the two teardrop-shaped pieces to each other and to the rondelle swirls on either side.

Thread the needle then secure with a knot. Starting from the back of the large component, pass your needle between layers of soutache in one of the added teardrop shapes and through layers of soutache to the front of the component. Repeat with a few stitches for each teardrop shape to better secure the pieces.

Glue and trim any extra soutache cords as you did in Step 8.
STEP 21
Place one small soutache component face up on a sheet of paper and trace around it. Cut out the shape. Trace the paper shape onto a piece of leather and cut out the leather shape.

Repeat to create leather backing piece for the remaining small soutache component and the large soutache component.

First Strand

STEP 22
Pass one 6mm jumpring through the loop on one portion of one 2-strand hook clasp then close. Use one 4mm jumpring to attach the second loop on the same portion of the clasp.

Repeat to attach the second portion of the clasp.
STEP 23
String onto the 22-inch length of beading wire: one 2mm crimp bead, one Accu-Guard™ wire protector and the 6mm jumpring attached to one portion of the clasp. Pass the beading wire back through the crimp bead. Pull the beading wire so the crimp rests snug against the wire protector. Crimp then trim the excess from the short end of the beading wire.
STEP 24
String the following onto the beading wire:
  • Two sets of:
    • One 4mm smoky mauve rondelle

    • One gold-plated flower bead cap (small side first)
    • One 8mm iridescent purple pearl
    • One gold-plated flower bead cap (large side first)
    • One 6mm iridescent purple pearl
STEP 27
Place one small soutache component against the beading wire, with the end snug against the last 6mm pearl that was strung and the pear pearl facing out. Determine the exact placement that you prefer. You may wish to use a small piece of tape to help keep the beading wire in place.

Thread the needle and knot the end of the thread. Secure the thread to the back of the small soutache component. Pass the needle out through the groove of one of the outer cords of the component.

Place the matching leather piece on the back of the component, over the beading wire. Pass the needle back through the soutache and up through the leather backing, approximately 1/8 inch from the edge. Pass the needle back through the soutache cord, starting between the leather and cord to the outside of the piece.

Keep stitching all around the soutache component, attaching the leather and securing the beading wire within.

When you finish push the needle between the backing and the outer soutache, exiting through the cord groove, don't pull the thread all the way through. Apply a small dab of glue to the thread, close to the back of the component. Pull the needle the rest of the way through and allow to dry and then trim.
STEP 28
String the following onto the beading wire:
  • One 4mm iridescent purple pearl
  • One 4mm smoky mauve rondelle
  • One 6mm smoky mauve rondelle
  • One 4mm smoky mauve rondelle
  • One 3mm iridescent purple Swarovski pearl
STEP 29
Using the technique applied in Step 29 attach the large soutache component to the beading wire, then repeat Step 30.
STEP 30
Using the technique applied in Step 29 and 31, attach the second small soutache component to the beading wire.
STEP 31
Repeat Step 28 in reverse to complete the pattern for the second strand.

Repeat the technique of Step 27 to complete the necklace.
