Fire Mountain Gems and Beads' Jewelry-Making Contest 2010 featuring Swarovski crystal
||Meet the Designer-Artist
Where do you live?
Central New York
Describe your artistic style.
I'd say I'm an expressionist. I like to express something and feel something from a piece.
What inspires you as a designer-artist?
Colors. I love sterling silver wire to craft into jewelry.
What materials do you most enjoy working with?
Sterling silver beads, wire, chain, Swarovski crystals and pearls and sometimes gemstones.
What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Shades of Fall Necklace
What inspired this design?
I am a fan of Swarovski crystals and their pearls. I also love the fall for its warm colors, so I thought of falling leaves.
How did it come together?
It started as a thought--it became bigger and much more dramatic once I started putting it all together.
Share Your Background
When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?
After my son's death, I needed something to help me relax. I went to a jewelry show and was inspired by the artistic designs. I examined their work and decided I could do it.
Who introduced you to beading?
Janis, a local jewelry artist.
Do you have an artistic background?
Not personally, but art is in my family. My son is an artist and tells me I'm too symmetric!
How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and Beads®?
When I started looking online for beads to buy and I was overwhelmed by the variety offered.
What other hobbies do you have?
Reading and watching sports.
Do you belong to any beading societies or beading groups?
Not any longer. When I started, I belonged to The Bead Hive.
What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
Hobby and part-time. It is my source of relaxation--taking me to another emotional place that I enjoy.
If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
I had a website and that, plus word-of-mouth was my advertising. It got to be too much, since I work full-time.
Do you participate in any charity fundraisers?
I make awareness bracelets to support MS, which is dear to my heart because of my daughter-in-law.
Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Enjoy what you do. When it becomes stressful, stop!
