Fire Mountain Gems and Beads' Contest 2010 featuring Glass
Meet the Designer-Artist
Where do you live? Butler, Pennsylvania
Describe your artistic style. Somewhat eclectic, inspired by God.
What inspires you as a designer-artist? God and the brilliant colors that he has created. I love to pair colors together that you may not think work, but in the end you create a wonderful surprise.
What materials do you most enjoy working with? Mostly Swarovski crystals and pearls, but I love anything unique.
What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story? Lost in Paradise
What inspired this design? The color and beauty of the orchid caught my eye. I had to have it and make something with it.
How did it come together? For example, did you plan it out or did it define itself once you began working? I had a general idea in my head of how I wanted it to look, but in the end the piece came to life on its own.
Share Your Background
When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading? I sing in the choir at my church and one Christmas we had to wear black and white, not very exciting, so I made a red necklace to brighten up the outfit.
Who introduced you to beading? A co-worker introduced me to crimp beads and crimping pliers and God took it from there.
Do you have an artistic background? Unless you count finger painting and coloring outside the lines then no, I do not have an artistic background.
How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and Beads®? Through a search online.
What other hobbies do you have? I also enjoy photography and wood burning, this is where you burn images into wooden objects.
What role does jewelry-making play in your life? I think I want to keep jewelry making a hobby. I don't want to get burned out making jewelry all the time and then quit. I like to create pieces for fun, not a career.
If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry? This is all still new to me. Right now I just take a few pieces to choir practice and sell it there. I plan on doing some craft shows this summer.
Do you participate in any charity fundraisers? Last year I lost a dear friend and co-worker to breast cancer. My co-workers and I wanted to raise money and donate in her memory to the breast cancer foundation. I made some bracelets to donate and sell for the cause.
