Fire Mountain Gems and Beads' Jewelry-Making Contest 2010 featuring Crystal

Meet the Designer-Artist

Where do you live?
Meherrin, Virginia

Describe your artistic style.
I have very limited boundaries when it comes to being creative. My style changes like the weather so to put a label to it would almost be dangerous to my mental health. I think style should make you happy and if it doesn't then it's time to move on.

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
Life in general inspires me. I think that not only is it good to spotlight the positive things around us, but it is equally important and rewarding to transform the negative into something beautiful and inspiring.

What materials do you most enjoy working with?
I don't like to limit myself. While I do love silver and gemstones, I find it rewarding to play around with different materials that maybe I'm not immediately drawn to.

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
A Night in Shining Armor Necklace

What inspired this design?
The design was inspired by crystals. One alone in the faintest trace of sunlight radiates with an elegant glow so I was overjoyed by the possibilities that more than a dozen crystals could ultimately create.

How did it come together?
My final design came together almost by mistake. I would place a crystal down at one spot only to have it roll over toward another. After a series of runaway crystals I thought, "hey, this isn't so bad."

Share Your Background

When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?
Having needed a break from fashion designing and writing (my other two creative joys in life) I thought I'd take a chance and fork over part of my paycheck to buy a bundle of discount beads.

Who introduced you to beading?
One day out of the blue, my sister came home with a bag full of beads and beading supplies. All those assortable pieces and I just said, "good luck with that." Eventually curiosity got the best of me and I thought I'd give it a try.

Do you have an artistic background?
I've always been drawn to art, having been involved in some sort of crafty endeavor since I was in elementary school. With so many creative thoughts stirring in my mind, I always have a need to let them out.

How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and BeadsĀ®?
I stumbled upon my sister's Fire Mountain Gems and Beads catalog and was instantly blown away by the variety of products.

What other hobbies do you have?
I love all things art--anything from listening to under-the-radar indie music, to films, fashion design, comic art, video games and photography.

Beading Success

What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
Jewelry-making is a hobby that I enjoy as a way to distract myself from the stress of work or sometimes life in general. I find crafting to be therapy in its most enjoyable form.

If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
I have a steady job as a housekeeper at the local hospital, but I enjoy selling my hand-crafted jewelry to family and friends as a way to have extra money.

Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Always go with your own instincts and style. What may appear to be a major disaster to someone else, could very well be a life changing form of expression for yourself. Enjoy what you create and always be creative with the things you enjoy.
