Meet the Designer-Artist

Where do you live?
A little village in the Valleys of Wales, UK.

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
I am inspired by anything and everything. I love colour and sparkle and draw inspiration from shapes, especially those which present challenges. I use images from the natural and animal in many of my designs but also take inspiration from other cultures. Sometimes it's as simple as being inspired by the materials or beads in front of me.

What medium do you work with mostly?
I love the diversity of wire, as it can become literally anything you can imagine, especially when I incorporate other materials such as beads, enamels and clays. I like to work with everything from seed beads and jumprings to semiprecious stones and crystal clay. I like to be diverse and hate to be typecast!

Who introduced you to beading?
I have some items on Etsy and sell through a couple of boutique shops as well as my own two websites, and which specializes in gothic designs.

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Hooray for Hollywood

What inspired this design?
This one was inspired by the glamour of old Hollywood and the stars on the Hollywood walk of fame. The colour scheme reflects the classic era of black and white movies as well as having a simple but striking effect when worn.

How did it come together?
I did make a design sketch of this one, which I don't always do. This design required so many tiny crystal bicones that I needed a plan so I could work out how many of what colour to order before I started. That said, the design deviated from the original sketch a little in the end as I found I didn't like the way some aspects looked and thought of other ways of embellishing the piece as I worked.
