Meet the Designer-Artist

Where do you live?
Ocoee, Florida

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
I began making jewelry seven years ago it all began as a form of therapy, I had just lost a preemie baby and jewelry making really gave a sense of being able to do something productive since I was in a very bad depression at the time. Now it is still therapy but has become the way I totally provide for my other children since I'm a single mother of six.

What medium do you work with mostly?
I work with all kinds of wire and stones.

Why did you become enchanted with this style of jewelry-making?
I do huge jewelry, uncommon crazy designs, I believe whatever people make with their hands is a form of reflection, I've stayed with the same style over the years because mmm ... well I'm about expression.

Where and How do you sell your jewelry?
On my website: http://www.etsy.com/shop/monicaretana

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Mi Pano de Lagrimas

What inspired this design?
Well being a single mother and unable to stop creating jewelry, I created this necklace, "lol." I use my jewelry to express all of my feelings, the agates represent the tears, the gold quartz my losses and the spikes my sorrows, the other side of the necklace holds triangle charms that represent my other half ... my kids.

How did it come together?
I always begin with nothing, the wire shapes itself, I just give it a hand.
