"I've never won anything!"

THAT'S WHAT YOU MIGHT expect to hear from a contest winner. But Sue Sater won first place in the Metals category, Best in Show, the Grand Prize, and the coveted cover spot on Bead Star magazine . . . and she didn't even realize she had entered the contest! Whaaa?? Now that's what I call a real surprise.

Sue has been a dedicated employee at Crystal Creations Institute/Beads Gone Wild bead store in West Palm Beach, Florida, for nearly six years. She started as a customer, became a sales associate, and worked her way up to manager. "Working at the store has truly enhanced a hobby that I love." Sue began beading as a teenager and her passion has grown over the years. "I love working with seed beads and Delicas because of all the beautiful colors. I enjoy right-angle weave, peyote, and herringbone stitches. And loomwork and bead embroidery are also among my favorites. My wirework is kept very simple, as my techniques are basic."

Although Sater considers her wirework simple, the key elements in her winning piece are the silver "icicles" made from beautifully shaped silver wire. "I made this piece for fun and never gave any thought to entering it in a contest." When she found out that her boss Glenda Paunonen had entered her piece in the Bead Star contest on her behalf, she was surprised and honored.

One day Sue came to work and Glenda had a very serious expression on her face. Sue wondered, "Did I do something wrong?" Then Glenda burst out, "YOU WON!" Out of more than 2,000 entries, Sue Sater had won the whole enchilada. "I am thrilled that my piece won," Sater says. "I have never won a contest before, especially one on this scale." Along with a $500 gift certificate from first-prize Metals' sponsor Rings and Things, Sue also won a $1,000 gift certificate courtesy of the grandprize sponsor, Fire Mountain Gems and Beads. And to top off all that, Sue will also receive an all-expenses- paid trip for two to Santa Fe for Bead Fest Santa Fe, March 18-21, 2010. "I am usually a little shy when the attention is on me alone, but I am very happy about winning, and thank everyone who took the time to view my piece and vote." Bead Star 2009 Best in Show

Sue has left Florida and moved back to New Jersey to be with her son and grandchild. While everyone hopes to be an asset to the company they work for, it's another thing for the boss to turn out to be an asset to the employee. Clearly, Sue's boss thought she was a winner. And so do all the beaders who voted for Sue's beautiful necklace!
