Wear Your Wares

Are you wearing your own jewelry? Don't miss the opportunity to build your brand and advertise your jewelry by simply wearing your creations. This is one of the smartest and most cost-effective ways to sell jewelry and promote your business. Every time you leave the house is a chance to wear one or more of your pieces and be ready to sell, share your story and show off your designs to everyone.

The next step is to make sure all your friends and family wear your jewelry, too. Whether this is done through gifting or encouraging people to borrow pieces, this allows your community and social circles to help sell your jewelry. You'll be amazed how many people will appreciate being able to enjoy a piece of jewelry, even if it's just on loan for a period of time or specific occasion. These brand ambassadors are free walking advertisements for you and can help spread the word about your jewelry to everyone they know and meet.

We've found that wearing jewelry is contagious. Whether it's on news anchors, celebrities, social media or friends, seeing jewelry on others helps to keep it in the fashion forefront and increases demand. So let's keep everyone wearing jewelry, and lots of it--generating jewelry buzz helps all jewelry makers.

Work it!

Put on your jewelry and let it sell itself. Handmade jewelry is a perfect conversation starter whether you are waiting in line at the grocery store or sitting on the sidelines of a sporting event--it will get noticed. Chances are you'll hear, ''Wow, I love that necklace!'', or ''Where did you get your earrings?'', or ''Did you make that?'' This is the perfect opportunity for you to share your story, hand the person a business card and even offer to let them try on the piece of jewelry. The more you can engage the person and let them touch/feel the jewelry, the better chance they will want to purchase something from you. It's all about being approachable, warm and welcoming.

Another benefit to wearing your own jewelry is that you can ''road test'' it. This will allow you to see if it holds up well, the drape of a particular necklace, the weight of a pair of earrings and if you feel good wearing it. It's a great way to make sure you are happy with your own work and can confidently sell it to others.

Here's what one Fire Mountain Gems and Beads' customer says about wearing her wares ...

"Just to let you know I have verified this aspect of selling. I've worn pieces which I've sold right off my neck or wrist. My husband tends to tag along with me (or vice versa) and he's a wonderful assistant. If he sees anyone looking at the jewelry I'm wearing he always boasts about how proud he is that I've designed and made the piece of jewelry myself. Between him and a number of my good friends, I've made several sales. Also, I beaded a peyote bead pattern for a business card holder. When I offer my card which I do on a regular basis, I remove the card from the holder and most people ask where I bought the card holder and that becomes a great introduction to my work."

Build Your Brand (and $$$)

Creating business cards and giving them out everywhere is a powerful marketing tool. Include business cards when you gift or loan jewelry to others so they can help you sell your jewelry, too. Here are some tips for creating professional business cards:
  • Include contact info such as your name, business name, logo, description of your services, phone number, email, website and social media sites (such as Instagram or Facebook) if applicable
  • Keep some white space on the business card--less is more when it comes to design and clutter takes away from your message
  • Don't forget about the back of the business card--you can include a special offer or additional information on the back
  • Have cards professionally printed to ensure the best possible presentation

Jewelry Rolls

Jewelry Roll

Sales can literally happen on the spot no matter where you are. Think of yourself as a mobile salesperson, as you can carry select jewelry pieces with you and have them ready to sell at all times. Jewelry rolls offer convenient ways to securely carry, store and display jewelry to prospective customers and easily fit inside a purse. Have jewelry priced and ready to go for quick-and-easy sales.

Presentation is so important. Create beautiful handwritten price tags and secure them with organza ribbon to top off your handmade work. It's also helpful to include the primary materials on the tag and your business name and logo. Seal the deal by offering a coordinating gift pouch for added flair and perceived value.

Here's what one Fire Mountain Gems and Beads customer says about her selling experience ...

"My local coffee shop is a goldmine of customers. They also let me display and sell some things there. But I always wear my jewelry and always have a few pieces with me with price tags. Yes- involve family, friends and the local coffee shop employees who are fashion friendly. I gave a pair of earrings as a gift and made several sales from her referrals. Win-Win! She thinks I'm entrepreneurial and I feel the same about her. I also sit in the coffee shop and assemble pieces and it always draws interest and customers and at times- show invitations. Yes! Work it! I also drink coffee and support the local coffee shop- so we help each other. I also walk around small towns introducing myself to owners and managers while wearing my jewelry. I also get involved with local events and art/craft/designer events. I always benefit from getting out there. We may like to sit home and work in jammies but we are also our best resource for ''soft'' sales which requires getting out the door. I recently found myself in our local bike shop that has a coffee bar. I sat down and started beading and chatting. An hour later I walked out with sales and great cast off bike chain that I will be ''rockin'' into jewelry. So--get creative! The world awaits with a hunger for handmade jewelry."

Don't forget about social media. Wear jewelry in all your pictures and hashtag your business name and have other friends and family do the same. Anywhere you can show off jewelry and spread the word is an opportunity to build your brand and sell pieces.

Use local events and occasions to showcase your jewelry such as wearing your own school-spirited jewelry designs or appropriately themed jewelry for community gatherings for attention-getting results. Be creative about how you get your jewelry out and about, whether it's a local high school prom, weddings, beauty pageants, political races or local newscasters. You can offer to have people wear your jewelry in exchange for them giving you jewelry credit or advertising.

It's always best to sell the jewelry you're wearing or have with you because you have the customer right in front of you. However, you may also want to suggest that you can take custom orders or make something similar if they're not finding exactly what they're looking for. The goal is to close the deal with them in person, so ask if you can arrange the custom order right then, rather than having them walk off and miss out on the sale.

Here's the challenge--wear your wares for business success and let's get everyone everywhere wearing lots and lots of jewelry!
