Making jewelry is a creative endeavor, yet all jewelry creations can benefit from some simple design principles. This seven-part series will help you to have the tools you need to create cohesive jewelry designs. These articles will cover the principles of balance, proportion, contrast, unity, harmony, movement and emphasis, complete with examples.

Part 4 - Proportion

Proportion is the relationship of one part of a design to another or one area to the whole. It conveys the feeling of unity when all the elements (color, size, amount) in a particular jewelry piece relate well to each other. When the relative size of elements seems wrong or out of balance, it intuitively feels off.

In proportion

When something is in proportion it seems more natural. There are mathematical equations, like the Golden Ratio, which are said to achieve natural proportions, but for most the senses are the easiest way to judge. Laying out a project beforehand should give a good idea as to whether the finished piece will look right or not.

To create designs that feel in proportion, use consistent increments each time, whether sizing up or down a group of components that are relative to each other. This can be done by reducing or increasing by the same number of millimeters or percentages.

Exaggerated proportion

Exaggerated proportion is the opposite of in proportion and is particularly helpful when designing with focal components. By keeping the focal piece large and the surrounding elements small, you ensure the centerpiece gets the most attention.
