In stark contrast to the previous years' robust hues, the combination of Pantone's pastel rose quartz and serenity is soft on the eyes, nurturing emotions of tranquility in our fast-paced, neon modern society.

PANTONE® 2016 Color of the Year: Serenity and Rose Quartz Everyone is searching for a way to find balance in the workplace, home and general well-being. Pantone has chosen two softer complementary shades that embody such a balance for 2016. Rose Quartz is a pale blush pink that is warm and stirs connotations of healing and compassion. Serenity is a soft, pastel sky blue that is cool and promotes relaxation. They are a union of earth and sky, the connection of body to mind, and is a duality that challenges preconceived assumptions about color association.

Fashion has continued to see a shift towards gender blurring in more androgynous clothing silhouettes. Society also continues to reassess traditional roles of men and women as we strive for gender equality on all fronts. These two naturally compatible colors help to create further fluidity between male and female, blending the lines of gender norms. Today, individuals are seeing their gender as an ''adaptive canvas'' for creating who they are while feeling less constrained by traditional stereotypes such as color signifiers. This presents an exciting opportunity for designers looking to expand palettes and appeal to new demographics.

The harmonious pairing of Rose Quartz and Serenity is also designed to provide emotional nourishment in its playful collaboration. These softer colors are an example of when Aristotle said, ''the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.'' Both colors are beautiful on their own, but it is the synergistic display between the hues that conjures a multi-sensorial reaction. Use this evocative nature to your benefit when creating jewelry by combining textures and finishes from naturally matte gemstone material to shiny Swarovski® crystals and more. These feel-good hues transition well to each season since they contain warm and cool tones, and they work as the main color scheme or as accents and contrast using one as a base to build up the other.

While some may see the duo as a surprising choice for Pantone's color of the year, Rose Quartz and Serenity truly make sense as the representation of our desire for balance and expression in 2016.
