Lacy's Stiff Stuff™ is a favorite jewelry-making base for beadwork--especially seed beads. Aside from this beading foundation showing up in many of our jewelry contest entries, Fire Mountain Gems' own jewelry designers also love to incorporate the backing in many of their creations. Here are some helpful tips and tricks to making the most of Lacy's Stiff Stuff.

Lacy's Stiff Stuff is available in 11x8-1/2 inch sheets with a 0.75mm thickness and is easily cut to the size or shape of your jewelry designs. Draw on, trace through or apply iron-on transfers directly to the material as a guide or design element. Since Lacy's Stiff Stuff is as rigid as cardboard (but is still flexible to bend with your designs), shapes can have cutouts or thin strips without worrying about ripping.

If the standard sheet size isn't large enough for your design, or you want to work in more manageable sizes then combine later, Lacy's Stiff Stuff can be glued together. Simply add E6000® Jewelry and Craft Adhesive to the seam of two pieces butted together. Do not overlap. Once the glue has dried the two pieces are connected and the seam is able to be beaded over.

This beading base comes standard in white, but that doesn't mean you're limited to this color. Some jewelry designers hide Lacy's Stiff Stuff completely with beads while others allow the foundation to show through as a design element. Easily color portions of the backing with permanent markers or Gilders Paste®.

You can also use Rit dyes. Mix 1 tsp per 2 cups boiling water. Remove from heat and let your Lacy's Stiff Stuff soak for about 60 seconds.* Rinse the dyed piece in cool water then pat away excessive water. Once the Lacy's Stiff Stuff has finished air drying, color on top of, stitch beads on or otherwise embellish. This foundation does not become limp or shrink after wetting or dyeing.

Note: Color variances can be achieved by adjusting soaking time

How to Use Lacy's Stiff Stuff™

It's time to get creating! Needles glide through Lacy's Stiff Stuff for direct bead embroidery. While seed beads are a favorite embellishment opportunity, designer-artists also use Lacy's Stiff Stuff as backing for:
The material is strong enough to not rip if connected to other Lacy's Stiff Stuff pieces with chain and withstands dangling beaded strands. If you have a smooth surface you want to embellish, simply add beads to Lacy's Stiff Stuff and adhere to the otherwise un-beadable surface. While this foundation is often used to provide a solid backing for larger designs, it's not uncommon to use one sheet in multiple smaller applications like for this seed-beaded bangle bracelet.
