Ali Baba's Cave Pendant

Preparation

STEP 1
Make a full-size design of the pendant, or photocopy picture 1, enlarging it to the desired size. Transfer the diagram to fabric for under backing. Glue the cabochon in the marked place. Let the glue dry.

Beading the Cabochon

STEP 2
Figure 1

Figure 2
Sew a basic row in D (Fig. 1). When the row is finished go through all the beads, pulling tightly on the thread. Sew a row in A around the beaded cabochon (Fig. 1).

The Rivoli

STEP 3
Figure 3
In the place, marked for the rivoli, draw a circle of the same size as your rivoli is. Make a cross-shaped incision in the centre of the circle (Picture 1). Glue the rivoli in the incision. Be careful to correct its position while the glue has not dried! Bead your rivoli in D (Fig. 1). Continue beading in I (Fig. 3). Go through the last bead row for several times, pulling tightly on the thread.

Bead Embroidery

STEP 4
Embroider along the edge of the pendant: sew one row in D, then one more row in B. See the photograph to embroider the free space using C, E, F, G and H, or work a design of your own. Attach E beads in a random order so that they were situated closely to each other. Sew all the rest seed beads along the marked lines. Note: when you have finished embroidering one line, go through all the beads in this line, pulling the thread taut.

Outer Backing

STEP 5
Figure 4
Trim away all the excess fabric. Put the finished pendant back side down on a piece of thin paperboard and trace its outline. Then remove the pendant and draw a second line about 1/16" (2mm) inside the traced line. Cut out the pattern along the second line and glue it to the back side of the pendant. Now glue the leather atop of the paperboard. Let the glue dry and trim away all the excess leather. Work the basic edge row in E (Fig. 4). Attach one L bead at the bottom of the pendant.

Assembling

STEP 6
Figure 5

Work two strings of beads, altering A, I and J, K (see Fig. 5 for the pattern and repeat it four times for each string). Attach the strings to the upper part of the pendant. Attach a toggle clasp to the ends of the strings.
