Let's Talk Hobbies

How often are you asked, "What are your hobbies?" "Do you have any hobbies?" Or told to get a hobby?

According to Oxford's English dictionary, a hobby is a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one's leisure time.

Sounds easy enough, right? But so often, people say they are too busy for hobbies or not sure what hobby to choose. Many already have a hobby without formally defining it as such. But here's why they are important and much simpler to find and enjoy than you may think.

The Benefits of Hobbies

Regularly immersing yourself in a hobby can be beneficial for overall health, both mind and body. Hobbies have been shown to lower stress, help promote better physical health and better sleep, and provide more energy and focus. Hobbies let you take time for yourself and practice mindfulness without even realizing it.

Some hobbies have also been shown to have social and career benefits. They can build up social connections, improve work performance and increase happiness. Experts believe that as little as 20 minutes a week of diversion through a hobby is beneficial.

Finding a Hobby

Think about what you enjoy, even if you don’t do it often. Do you have fun putting together recipes in the kitchen, working in the yard, or creating jewelry? Is there something you collect or shop for that makes you happy? Once you've identified something that brings you joy then it's easy to make that into a full-fledged hobby.

Find something you enjoy by searching online or in a local newspaper for community events, classes or activities. Take advantage of volunteer opportunities, join a club, research things you admire or start a Pinterest board to collect ideas that inspire you. If being creative sounds good to you we invite you to explore our Jewelry-Maker's Library to discover jewelry-making tutorials, instructions, videos and design inspiration.
