How to Set Up the Rotary Tool

video

Follow along with Joel Peterson to see how to change out the various bits or attach a flex shaft to the rotary tool and use this jewelry-making tool for inlaying, cutting, carving, cleaning and polishing.

Instructions

Drill Bit Instructions

Step 1

Press down on the locking pin to prevent the main shaft from spinning. Unscrew the main chuck then remove the collet.

Note: The main chuck will continue to spin on the main shaft if the locking pin isn't pressed.

Step 2

Insert the flat end of the drill bit inside the collet to determine if the size of the drill bit is correct. The collet is the correct size for the drill bit if the bit slides in easily, but is not too loose.

If the size is not correct, select the correct sized collet from the many different sizes in the kit.

Step 3

Remove the drill bit from the collet then insert the collet back into the shaft. Press down on the locking pin then screw the main chuck onto the main shaft. Insert the drill bit then finish tightening the chuck. Use a wrench to tighten the chuck completely.

Step 4

Press the power switch on the back of the rotary tool to turn it on. Adjust the switch beneath the power button to adjust to the desired speed. Press the power button again to turn off the power.

Step 5

Press down on the locking pin then untighten the main shaft with the wrench. Manually unscrew the main shaft, loosening it just enough to remove the drill bit.

Flex Shaft Instructions

Step 1

Press down on the locking pin, unscrew the main chuck then remove the collet.

Remove the collar, exposing the threads.

Step 2

Match the square shaft of the flex shaft accessory with the corresponding collet of the rotary tool (similar to Step 2).

Insert the collet into the rotary tool. Press down on the locking pin then screw the main chuck onto the main shaft.

Pull the metal up to expose the square shaft and unscrew accessory. Press down the locking pin then insert the square shaft accessory into the main shaft on the rotary tool.

Press down the locking pin then screw the main shaft onto the rotary tool to secure the square shaft accessory. Tighten the main shaft with a wrench. Adjust the metal cover on the flex shaft accessory over the rotary tool then manually screw it into place.

Note: The flex shaft cord may need adjusting as you tighten.

Hang the rotary tool on the hanging device for safe and easy using.

Step 3

Pull the locking collar of the flex shaft pen back from the shaft, locking the shaft into place. Unscrew the shaft to expose a collet.

Insert the flat end of a bit inside the collet to determine if the size of the bit is correct.

Step 4

With the collar moved back, insert the collet inside the pen. Manually screw on the main chuck then insert the diamond bit.

Continue to manually tighten the main chuck then tighten with a wrench. Let go of the collar.

Demonstration

Step 1

Wear safety glasses and face mask for protection.

Step 2

Insert the ceramic accessory into the flex shaft. Switch the power on to the flex shaft. While the flex shaft is spinning, gently slide the ceramic accessory up and down on its side to the desired edges of the wood disc to create divots. Switch the power off when desired look is obtained.
