The Aftermath of Maui Wildfires – The Inspiring Stories of Jewelry Artists

by Curtis Bocanegra, Design Idea PL22

In 2023, the Maui wildfires emerged as one of the deadliest fires the United States has seen since 1871, marking Hawaii's most catastrophic natural disaster. Claiming 100 lives and decimating the historic town of Lahaina, the tragedy left thousands displaced, with damages estimated at $6 billion.

As we connected with our Maui customers and supported relief efforts, we encountered inspiring stories of resilience. Artists are rebuilding their lives and supporting their community through jewelry making. Two artists have shared their heart-touching journeys:

Meet Stephanie Benitz

Business: Little Ocean Jewelry

In the wake of the devastating Maui wildfires, local jewelry artist Stephanie Benitz shares her story of loss, resilience and community spirit. Living on the north shore, Stephanie recounts the surreal silence that fell over the island, reminiscent of the eerie quiet during the pandemic's peak.

"Imagine how it was during the pandemic when it went ghost silent, that is what happened here overnight," Stephanie recalls, painting a vivid picture of the sudden upheaval. Despite the physical safety of her loved ones, the community grapples with immense loss. "It doesn’t feel real – I have survivors’ guilt – I still have my home and can go and set up and sell my things," she shares, highlighting both the gratitude and guilt she experiences.

Stephanie's home transformed into a donation hub, epitomizing the collective effort to navigate the crisis. "I have never felt a community support like this," she states, reflecting on the profound unity and support that surged through Maui. We are all small businesses here and we are all trying to survive," Stephanie emphasizes.

Stephanie's journey into jewelry making began five years ago with wire-wrapping. The pandemic sparked her interest in beaded work, leading her to create beaded fringe earrings that draw inspiration from Maui's natural beauty. Despite the challenges, her art has become a beacon of hope and a means of livelihood.

Stephanie's journey is a powerful reminder of the strength found in vulnerability and the progress that blooms from perseverance. “Don’t stop, don’t quit! When you feel like you’re not making progress – it is just about getting up the next day and putting in the effort," she advises, echoing a sentiment of relentless pursuit and personal growth.

Meet Curtis Bocanegra

Business: Starlight Bee Company

Follow: Instagram

In the heart of Maui, Curtis Bocanegra embarks on a journey that marries the ancient craft of beekeeping with the intricate art of jewelry making. Curtis isn't just your typical beekeeper, he's a designer-artist whose inspiration flows as freely as the honey from his hives.

Curtis calls the majestic island of Maui his home, a place where the natural world isn't just a backdrop for daily life but the core of his artistic inspiration. It's in this idyllic setting that Curtis found his calling, not just in beekeeping but in the realm of wire jewelry making—a medium through which he channels the intricate beauty of his surroundings into wearable art.

Wire, with its versatility and strength, became Curtis's medium of choice. It allowed him the freedom to create intricate designs that reflected the natural beauty of his surroundings. "Wire weaving isn't just a technique; it's a way to capture the complexity and beauty of Maui's landscapes," he explains.

Curtis mostly sells online, and his pieces draw inspiration from the breathtaking views of stars and the moon rising over Maui, complemented by swirling clouds. He captures these scenes within his wire weaves. "I don’t just plan my creations; they evolve as I work, much like the natural scenes that inspire them," he reflects.

These artists not only capture the essence of Maui's natural splendor but also its indomitable spirit, inviting us all to support and be part of the island's journey to recovery.
