Animal Print - A Fashion Attraction

Design Ideas NE4M & NJ2S

Animal Print is a trend that never goes out of style. Whether it is leopard, zebra or tiger patterns, they are here to stay. But how did they get their start, and what is the best way to use them in jewelry?

The Rise of the Print

Humans have long been fascinated with patterns found in nature, notably animals. Animal fur was long prized and was worn by the wealthy. Animal prints without the use of fur are a natural progression.

In the 20th century, fashion designers like Christian Dior helped popularize animal-inspired textiles, most notably the leopard's spots. Soon, celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve were wearing leopard designs. Since that time animal print has been alive and well in popular culture, spotted on everyone from the Duchess of Cambridge to Reese Witherspoon.

Designing with Animal Print

Animal designs can bring a sense of fun to your jewelry, whether you use a lot or a little. If subtle touches are more your style, start small and keep it simple, or if it's a pattern you love, go wild.

To create a more playful look, try a large acrylic zebra pattern bead and pair it with a bright red glass bead on each side.

Go beyond the traditional leopard, cheetah and zebra and try other styles, like butterfly, peacock or even snake. These natural markings are beautiful and can work in a simple earring or an elaborate necklace.

For a classy, vintage feel, try combining resin tortoiseshell components with smooth druk glass beads. Add a little gold for an extra touch of elegance.

Animal prints can also serve as inspiration. Combine zebra ''jasper'' with black and white beads for an interpretation of zebra skin. Flat back rhinestones, seed beads and polymer clays allow you to create any animal design on a variety of surfaces, from pendants to cellphone cases.

With so many animal prints to choose from, feel free to let your imagination run wild with this ever-popular trend.
