What is the best size and type of sterling silver wire to make earring wires?
- Elaine
Half-hard 22-gauge Argentium® sterling silver, sterling silver or sterling silver-filled wire would be appropriate for most ear wire styles. If you will be hammering your designs, you may want to start with dead-soft wire of a heavier gauge—such as 20-gauge dead-soft silver wire—as hammering will harden the wire, making it stiffer as your design develops.
For consistency in your earring wire shape, you may want to consider using a wire jig. If you're not familiar with using a jig, be sure to check out the "How to Use a Wire Jig" how-to video and illustrated instructions.
