Topics: Art Clay® Toxicity and Durability with Dog Tags

Q.
I'm interested in making a line of tags for dog collars out of the art clay. Is there any reason I shouldn't use this sort of medium (toxicity, etc.)? I'm also curious as to its durability. Thanks in advance for any advice!

A.
Art Clay is a non-toxic material, so there's no toxicity issue for using it around pets. However, fine silver is quite a bit softer than sterling silver or stainless steel, so may not hold up to the wear and tear that dogs can inflict. One option would be to use rivets to cold connect your handmade dog tag to a stainless steel blank. Another is to use colorful wire to stitch the dog tag to a stainless steel blank. You can create holes by using the hole-punch tool.
